Why I Include an Engagement Session in Every Wedding Experience
An engagement session is about more than having photographs for an announcement or save the date.
It gives us time to get to know one another, discover what feels natural for you as a couple, and create portraits without the schedule of a wedding day moving around us. That is why I include a complimentary engagement session in my Legacy Wedding Experience.
I do not consider it an extra. I consider it part of preparing well for your wedding.
Your wedding day should not be our first time working together
Your wedding photographer will be beside you during some of the most emotional and unrepeatable moments of the day.
An engagement session allows us to build trust before those moments arrive. You experience how I guide you, how I give direction, and how I make adjustments without expecting you to already know what to do.
By the wedding day, I am no longer arriving as a stranger with a camera. We already know how to communicate and work together.
You learn what feels natural in front of the camera
Most couples are not professionally trained models, and they do not need to be.
During the engagement session, we can move slowly and try different kinds of direction. I learn how you naturally connect, whether that means quiet closeness, laughter, movement, or a little bit of all three.
You also learn that being photographed does not have to feel stiff or uncomfortable. This usually makes the wedding portraits feel easier because the process is already familiar.
The session can reflect your relationship
Your engagement portraits do not have to look like everyone else's.
We can build the session around a meaningful location, a shared interest, a favorite season, or a visual idea that feels like you. It can be romantic and polished, relaxed and playful, or inspired by a film or story you both love.
The consultation gives us space to talk through the idea and create something personal instead of choosing a location simply because it is popular.
The photographs can become part of your wedding planning
Engagement photographs can be used throughout the months leading up to the wedding.
Couples may use them for save the dates, wedding websites, invitations, guest books, announcements, framed displays, or gifts for family. Within my wedding experience, an engagement portrait can also become a custom framed Signature Portrait Display for guests to sign at the wedding.
This allows the photographs to become part of the celebration instead of remaining separate from it.
It helps the wedding photography feel more natural
The engagement session teaches me small but important things about you.
I learn which kinds of prompts create genuine reactions, how you are most comfortable standing together, and when you need more direction or more space. That knowledge helps me guide you efficiently on the wedding day without making the portraits feel rushed.
It also gives you one less uncertainty to carry. You already know what it feels like to be photographed by me and what you can expect when it matters most.
Why is the engagement session complimentary?
I include the engagement session because it strengthens the entire wedding experience.
The time we spend together helps me understand your relationship, gives you confidence in front of the camera, and allows us to create photographs that can be used throughout your wedding planning. It also helps the wedding day feel more personal and prepared.
It is complimentary because I believe this preparation benefits both the experience and the final work. It is not simply an additional photo session. It is part of how I care for my couples from the beginning.

Heirlooms from the beginning

Wedding photography begins before the wedding day. It begins with listening, planning, and creating a relationship built on trust.
I photograph couples and intimate weddings in Elmira, New York, and throughout the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes. If you are planning a wedding and want photography to feel personal, guided, and thoughtfully prepared, I would love to hear what you are imagining.
