Relaxed Family Photography in Elmira, NY
Family photos do not have to mean asking everyone to stand still, smile at the camera, and hope the kids cooperate.
My family photography sessions in Elmira, New York are fully guided, but they are also client-paced. I want enough structure to create beautiful family portraits while leaving room for your children to warm up, move around, take a break, and simply be themselves.
Most family sessions last around 45–60 minutes, depending on what your family needs in the moment.
Family Photos Without the Rush
Young children rarely care about the schedule we had in mind, and that is okay.
During your session, I will guide you into flattering positions and help create the interactions I am looking for, but I am also paying attention to how everyone is doing. Sometimes we stop and let a child explore for a minute. Sometimes we walk, play, cuddle, or change direction completely.
Being client-paced does not mean the session has no structure. It simply means I am not trying to force your family through a rigid list of poses when something else would work better.
The goal is to create family portraits that feel polished while still looking like the people you love.
A Few Ways to Keep Your Family Session Relaxed
You do not need to prepare your children to “perform” for family photos. A little preparation can make the experience much easier:
- Choose outfits that coordinate without matching exactly and that everyone can comfortably move in.
- Give young children time to warm up instead of expecting smiles immediately.
- Bring a small snack or familiar comfort item if your child may need one.
- Try not to correct every little behavior during the session. I am used to working around movement and short attention spans.
- Focus on being together instead of constantly looking toward the camera. Some of my favorite photographs happen in between the traditional portraits.
We will talk about wardrobe, location, and your family before the session so you do not have to figure everything out on your own.
Family Maternity Photos Before Your Family Grows
A family portrait session is also a beautiful maternity photography option when you already have little ones at home.
Instead of making the entire experience about pregnancy, we can document the family that exists right now, just before it changes again.
That may mean photographs of the whole family together, your children with you, portraits with your partner, and a few maternity portraits focused entirely on you.
There is something special about having one last set of family photographs before the new baby arrives. Your older child will never be exactly this age again, your family dynamic is about to change, and this chapter deserves to be remembered too.
